This month 麻豆女郎 Fellow Roel Sterckx will take up two distinguished academic appointments in East Asia, delivering high-profile lectures in Hong Kong and Taipei that bridge Chinese history, agriculture, and intellectual life.

On 12 May, Roel will give the Joseph Needham Public Lecture at the Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The talk, titled 鈥淭hose who are learned do not farm and farmers do not learn鈥: Writing agriculture in early China, explores how classical Chinese texts reflect and shape historical attitudes toward agriculture and knowledge production. The lecture targeted to students, graduate researchers, and scholars, is also open to the public.

Later in the month, Professor Sterckx will take up the Lo Chia-lun International Sinology Chair at National Chengchi University in Taipei, Taiwan. This endowed position, named after the prominent Chinese educator and diplomat Luo Jialun, functions as a visiting professorship. During a two-week residency, Roel will deliver a series of lectures and seminars engaging with early Chinese texts and traditions.
